Maloney’s top student aspires to help others through technology

MERIDEN — Two years ago, as a sophomore at Maloney Significant College, Havi Nguyen was introduced to personal computer science and coding. 

“I observed it definitely interesting,” explained Nguyen, who is now 18 and will graduate this thirty day period ranked 1st in her course. 

Nguyen stated she was specially drawn to the trouble-fixing aspect of coding.

So upcoming fall, she will commence learning computer system science at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. Nguyen hopes to a single day perform for a firm that works by using technology to support other folks, together with those people with disabilities or language barriers.   

“There are tons of issues with inequality,” Nguyen said. “I want to get the job done to help make issues far better.”

All through her years in high university, Nguyen compiled a cumulative 4.8 grade level normal. But she didn’t just concentration on lecturers and researching. 

“I preferred to make the most of my time here,” she stated. So Nguyen became thoroughly involved in several clubs, which includes her school’s LEO Club and the Black Pupil Alliance.

The LEO Club recently held drives for the Meriden Humane Modern society and organized fundraisers for leads to like breast most cancers consciousness. Nguyen eventually became the group’s president. 

Nguyen grew up in Meriden. Her mom is Kimanh Vu and her father is Do Nguyen. She has a brother who is 21. 

Nguyen attended Thomas Hooker Elementary College and Thomas Edison Center College. She recalled when she was in fifth grade that an educator, who wasn’t her trainer, built a prediction. 

“She generally informed me that I would be valedictorian,” Nguyen mentioned. But as a fifth quality student, she was not so certain.

The same educator attended Maloney’s new Major 10 scholar dinner. “She handed me a notice that I gave her from fifth quality, where by I wrote, ‘thank you.’”

In the note Nguyen insisted that she would be valedictorian. She could not think her previous educator had held on to it for all those yrs.

And that educator wouldn’t be the only man or woman to acquire observe of Nguyen’s tutorial achievements. 

“Havi is one particular of the ideal pupils I have ever had, conveniently a single of the most completed learners,” said Daniel Lobner, Nguyen’s State-of-the-art Placement United States Heritage trainer in her sophomore calendar year. 

Lobner described his previous pupil as deeply insightful and a brilliant author.
